The country is stoked to have the league back in action with new teams, new formats and new changes. Table 1.1 shows the teams and their newly appointed captains for this year’s edition.

This edition will witness some first-time captains and some others who have proven their mettle, time and again.

First time Captains

Jadeja, M.Agarwal and H. Pandya will all be captaining their ships for the first time. They are talented and energetic sportsmen who have proven themselves in the craft. They have stepped up whenever their team needed them to and have delivered results that have made way for some extraordinary wins in the past.

Chennai’s strategy with a cool captain has worked in their favour so far. But turning to a slightly aggressive captain, might shift gears for the team. This change in captaincy will be quite interesting to sit back and watch.

M.Agarwal has been an integral part of Punjab and has represented the team with utmost sincerity. His dedication towards the team and craft has bestowed him with the responsibility of leading the team. It will be a treat to watch this star in action.

H.Pandya is a highly explosive gamechanger who had played for the Mumbai team franchise since 2015. He was recently signed by Gujarat who have given him the responsibility of leading the brand new team. His power hitting, finishing skills, energy and determination are all a measure of his potential to lead the team.

Looking forward to the way his captaincy might change and define the course of this new team.

Seasoned Captains

Bangalore welcomed Faf to their team and gave him the responsibility of captainship. Kohli had proven to be an able leader, it will surely hurt the fans to not see their beloved captain at the toss. But with Faf entering the picture for Bangalore, things might change for the better for the team. His captaincy records are outstanding, he is a strong leader and an explosive opening batsman who is capable of giving the team a steady and promising foundation to work on. His composure, determination and grit are worthy of that position and a breath of fresh air for the team.

The only leader who can command praises and respect when he walks into the field, is K.Williamson. His methods and demeanour are all worthy of praise.K. Williamson has been one of the most respected leaders of this age. The Hyderabad franchise went through a rather bleak season last year due to a lot of captaincy changes and some unfortunate games. K. Williamson might provide the team with a much needed consistency and support after a turbulent season.

KL Rahul needs no introduction. He has proven time and again why he is a successful captain, reliable batsman and a prolific wicket keeper. Team Lucknow in its debut season will be truly lucky to have Rahul leading them and captaining their ship to greater heights.

S.Iyer was entrusted with leading a pack of young, energetic bunch of players when he was given the reins of the Delhi team. They had been consistently occupying the bottom rung of the points table. Within the end of the next season he was able to lead the team to the 3rd position on the points table from the last position. With that, he justified the management’s faith in him. He is sure to lead his new team, Kolkata with the same fervour and determination.

All you need to know about the teams of Chennai & Kolkata in the biggest T20 League

Chennai, the defending champions are primed to win yet another trophy after that magnificent title win last edition. The defending champions have some wonderful players in their kitty, it’s up to MSD to now use them in the right way and to guide the team towards yet another magnificent title win.

On the other hand we have dynamic players like S. Iyer, A. Rahane and S. Billings making their way into Kolkata’s team. By signing such big names, Kolkata has proven that they have made some smart buys this season. They will be looking to avenge their loss in the final match against Chennai and make no mistakes on the path to victory. They also managed to buy back phenomenal players like P.Cumins and N.Rana, strengthening their team’s winning potential.

Let us see an overview of the strengths, weaknesses and key players of Kolkata and Chennai.

Chennai’s Strengths:

The collective experience of certain members helps build morale.
Jadeja and M.Ali’s joint spin attack is sure to wreak havoc on the opponents and finally the highly talented R.Gaikwad has had a great season last year and will strive to keep the streak.

Chennai’s Weakness:

The absence of Faf is surely going to hurt the morale of the team, he was an explosive player who they failed to retain this year.
Death bowling could be a concern if C.Jordan, Bravo and T.Deshpande fail to rein the opponents during the death overs.

Chennai’s Key players:

Dhoni, R. Gaikwad, D.Chahar, Moeen and the phenomenal Jadeja are key players to look out for this season.

Kolkata’s Strengths:

Wise buys and buy-backs before the tournament. This will instil confidence in the team and contribute towards a strong morale before the tournament begins.
Able captain, S. Iyer with his experience is geared up to lead his new team towards greater heights.

Hales can prove to be a powerful opener for the team.

Kolkata’s Weakness:

Without D. Karthik, they lack an experienced wicket-keeper. This might affect the game and the team’s potential.

Kolkata’s Key Players:

S. Naraine, Hales, Cumins and Iyer are players other teams need to lookout for during the tournament. A.Russell is a huge asset for the team and we will be witnessing a few memorable knocks from this outstanding player.

It will be exciting to see the defending champions and the runner ups from the last season play and continue to dominate the leaderboard with a good game of cricket

Understanding the winning prospects of the last season’s bottom 4 of the leaderboard – Rajasthan, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Punjab

The last season of the T20 League was exciting and nerve racking. There was a balance of good and bad games with some nail biters and games where underdogs dominated.
At the end of the tournament there were 4 teams that didn’t make it to the playoffs.
Let us understand if this year’s new signings are capable of ensuring that these teams finish in the Top 4 unlike last year.

Rajasthan Royals

The team has the most explosive top order and an impressive bowling department. Last edition had been quite eventful for the team but with new faces coming in, it is essential to get the dynamics of the team right.

An explosive top order with Samson, Padikkal, Butler and Hetmyer is looking forward to posting phenomenal numbers on the scoreboard.
The team has also bagged the brilliant Y.Chahal and R.Ashwin to lead their bowling attack creating a strong spin duo to topple the batting order of the opposite team.

There is a lack of all round players who can contribute both with bat and ball. This might affect the team’s balance.

Key Players:

Padikkal has played some impressive knocks in the past edition of the tournament showing a lot of promise. Samson and Butler have time and again proved their mettle in this craft. Y. Chahal has had an outstanding regime in his past team and will look forward to continuing the same for his new franchise.

Five time title winners, Mumbai are headlining Group A. They have won the highest number of titles and played 6 finals. The team is led by the mighty Rohit Sharma who has been having quite an eventful career as a newly appointed captain. He is a strong, and determined captain looking to lead the team to its 6th title this year.

The strong opening partnerships with the skill of the likes of Pollard and Yadav can propel the team towards outstanding wins.
A deadly death over bowling figures of Bumrah are impressive and daunting for anyone going up against this team.

Their spin department looks weak with the exit of Chahar and K. Pandya.
The batting order lacks the necessary depth at times.
We have seen the line up crumble after the loss of first 4-5 wickets in the past few games. The team lacks the presence of key players that have been instrumental in the 2020 title win.

Key players: The players that can turn the match around in a matter of overs are batting powerhouses Ishaan Kishan, Keiron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav. Mayank Markande and M Ashwin have also shown a lot of promise over the past couple of games in the tournament. Dewald Brewis is looking to wow the watchers of the tourney with his batting skills and averages that resemble that of a young AB in making.

Mumbai is looking strong with its phenomenal contenders for the esteemed orange cap.

The 2022 edition of the T-20 league is going to be a tough ride for Hyderabad’s team after they had to let go of Warner and R.Khan. However, K.Williamson who is the captain and the pillar of the team from down south is a leader who leads from the front.

Their pace attack is possibly their strongest suit. B. Kumar and T.Natarajan along with A.Samad make up a pretty decent bowling attack. Natarajan has been bowling the death overs and has made a mark for himself in the past few years.

Without R.Khan, the prolific spin specialist and a leading wicket taker for the team Hyderabad might seem off their balance.
They have had trouble managing the middle overs with their bowling attack, it is essential that they find their rhythm.

Key players:

A.Samad, Natarajan, Pooran, Tripathi and K. Williamson will have a lot of hopes banked on them for a smooth sailing tournament.

The Punjab team’s management have made some interesting buys for this season. They were able to bag Rabada, Dhawan and Bairstow, all of whom have had impressive careers in the T-20 League. They ended the season in the 6th position and will be looking to change things around for themselves this new edition.

Punjab’s batting order is highly impressive this season. They consist of Dhawan, Bairstow, M.Agarwal, L.Livingston, S.Khan and O.Smith form a rather impressive lineup.

The team lacks the support of an experienced spin department. Seasoned spinner R.Chahar will be expected to rise to the occasion and lead the attack single handedly.

Key Players:

Dhawan and Bairstow will be a delight to watch. The entire batting lineup looks highly explosive and will be something to watch out for.

The Teams that almost made it big – Delhi & Bangalore

The two teams that made it to the semi-finals but couldn’t hold the cup were Delhi and Bangalore. They were the two most favourite teams to win the title last year yet they couldn’t convert their fans’ dreams into reality.
Let us understand if these teams are going to continue to be everyone’s favourite this year as well. Delhi & Bangalore have been so close yet so far that this year they might bounce back harder to claim the cup.

Delhi Capitals

One of the most promising teams with an all round performance in the previous edition of the tournament. The team has consistently delivered with all departments chipping in towards the wins.

A strong batting lineup and top order is daunting and a force on their own.
A. Patel, C. Sakariya and M. Rahman all form the backbone of a strong bowling attack for the team.

The absence of their leading wicket taker is going to gnaw at the team’s confidence. Picking the right playing 11 is essential to keep the team tightly knit and to deliver results for the team.
The team also lacks a strong finisher and this could prove to be problematic if a situation should arise.

Key Players:

Shaw, Warner, and captain Pant are key players to look out for. Meanwhile if KS Bharat makes it to the playing 11 he is a potential game changer for the team. A. Patel, Sakariya, K Ahmed and M. Rahman can form a strong bowling attack potent enough to bring the other team to its knees.

A team that showed a lot of promise last season and was among the favourites to win the trophy was the team from Bangalore. But with a few key players being out of the team, it will be interesting to see how Bangalore manages to come together and put up a good show.

Faf has been signed by the team and he has the potential to give the team explosive start they need to post a huge total.
H.Patel can be Bangalore’s golden ticket to the finals this season. He has been impressive with the ball last season and will look towards maintaining his record.

Siraj and his impressive record these past few seasons have pushed management to retain him, hopefully he will be able to deliver to his full potential this season as well.

Bangalore’s spin department looks weak without the experience and presence of Y.Chahal. This absence might haunt them and put extra pressure on players like K.Sharma, Hasaranga and S.Ahmed to deliver immensely with the ball.

Key Players:

Faf, Hasaranga, Patel and Siraj are key players to keep an eye out for. Their collective potential can propel the team towards mammoth wins against some big teams this season.

Welcoming the newcomers – Lucknow & Gujarat

This year’s edition of the biggest T-20 League is going to witness newcomers. That is right, Lucknow and Gujarat will be making their debut games this season. It is going to be interesting to see these teams build a fan base, win matches and maintain a good team dynamic. They are teams that haven’t played together anywhere so it will be exciting to see how the newcomers fare in the league.

Let us understand the strengths, weaknesses and Key players of these two teams to get a better picture of the prospects for them this season.

Lucknow SuperGiants

This edition of the tournament is going to witness the new team which is going to be led by batting powerhouse Rahul. The team is looking to make a strong debut this year.

A strong opening partnership with reliable openers Rahul and de Cock.
We can also expect the likes of Stoinis, Hooda and M.Pandey to strengthen the middle order and to post and chase mammoth scores.
Awesh Khan with his explosive bowling figures and exceptional wicket taking skills is looking to continue his streak this year as well.

It is a new team, the team might take some time to find their rhythm.
A rather weak spin department might shake the bowling department for this team.

Key Players:

Players to look out for ahead of the season are A. Khan, M. Pandey, Rahul and R. Bishnoi.

Gujarat Titans

This is going to be the debut season for Gujarat’s team. They will be looking to get off the mark with a bang. They have been able to sign big names like Gill, R.Khan, H.Pandya. It is going to be interesting to see how the season unfolds for this young team.

A strong spin attack led by the phenomenal R.Khan, and pacer L.Ferguson and the mighty Shami makes this team’s bowling team powerful & frightening beyond measure.

Their middle order seems a little weak despite H.Pandya and J.Roy’s presence in the batting lineup. This could pose problems when they have huge totals to chase down.

Key Players:

L.Ferguson, R.Khan and the explosive H.Pandya are players other teams need to watch out for. Their bowling lineup is highly impressive and might pose a threat to the opponents batting order.

Fans of all teams will be waiting for their matches with bated breaths to see if they are indeed a threat to their favourite or their home teams.
